CT Mind Training – Who We Are

For over 30-years, the Fenton River Center has been offering a full range of leading edge psychotherapeutic and counseling services. Based in Storrs, less than 1-mile from the University of Connecticut, we provide our clients with a convenient, cozy, and private environment in a beautiful 1850s Greek revival building.

Founded by Brian Ahern MSW, and Holly Rawson LPC, the Fenton River Center was created with the goal of helping individuals thrive and grow using whatever tools were most effective in their individual case. We intimately understand how grappling with ADHD, depression, anxiety, or other developmental and emotional problems can profoundly effect both the individual and their family, in ways that can last for decades.

We believe that, in everyone, there is the potential for unlimited growth and success, and we have made it our mission to help our clients to affordably overcome their personal obstacles so that they can truly excel. We also believe that, if at all possible, people should not have to choose a “lesser of the evils“, trading in their primary symptoms for side effects (as often happens with drug therapies). While many of our clients do find drug therapies to be useful at one point or another, they often have concerns about short term side effects, and long term health ramifications (read more about ADHD and depression drug safety and efficacy questions by clicking the “Drugs” tab above).

In any event, drug therapies are just a temporary fix, and will often leave the individual back at square one as soon as the drug wears off. This can result in their original symptoms quickly recurring, as frequently happens in cases of ADHD, or the underlying latent susceptibility remaining, as happens with depression or anxiety, which leaves the individual vulnerable to relapse if they are triggered. We feel that all other options should be thoroughly explored before resigning oneself to a lifetime spent on pharmaceuticals.

Neurofeedback brain training is the most groundbreaking new addition to the Fenton River Center’s services, offering a ”mind gym” which uses advanced technology to improve brain function, overseen by director and neurotherapist, Kai Rawson-Ahern. Neurofeedback has been shown in numerous studies to be effective in treating ADHD, anxiety, depression, seizures, and many other psychiatric disorders, further details of which are available by clicking the above tabs for specific conditions or general ”News/Research“.

Top athletes (including the entire Italian national soccer team), executives, and musicians, also commonly use neurofeedback, as a way of improving “Peak Performance”, with more detail available above in the “Peak Performance” tab.

Neurofeedback has the tremendous power to go straight to the source of our thoughts and emotions (our brains), and then teach the brain to behave in a more desirable and optimized way, without the need for drugs.
